[Critical] Issues Logging In for some Admin Users

Postmortem

We recently addressed issues affecting admins. We would like to take the opportunity to further explain these issues and the steps we have taken to keep them from happening in the future.

Between 8:46 am and 9:20 am PT on August 10, 2023, some users may have experienced difficulties while working in Box. During this time, some Admin accounts were redirected to their landing page when logging in to the Admin Console. The issue occurred as a result of a recent code change in our ongoing effort to use more inclusive language. We were able to resolve the issue by rolling back the change. In addition, we are working to improve our alerting processes to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future. 

Analysis

As a part of the ongoing effort to use more inclusive language throughout Box, we are replacing instances of “/master” with “/admin” in the Admin Console URL. However, after making the change, some admins experienced problems with redirection to their landing page.

Corrective Actions

The following corrective actions have been completed or are planned:

  • Increase monitoring to help troubleshoot any future issues.
  • Update our testing documentation to prevent this issue from happening again.

We are continuously working to improve Box and want to make sure we are delivering the best product and user experience we can. We hope we have provided some clarity here and we would be happy to answer any questions you may still have regarding this matter.

After further monitoring, this incident is now considered resolved. Admin Login Services have been restored to full functionality. If you continue to experience any issues, please contact Box Support at https://support.box.com.
